ACEF 2024 Americans of Chinese Descent History Month Poster Design Contest

ACE Foundation is sponsoring a Poster Design Contest for 2024 Americans of Chinese Descent History Month among students across the United States.

Design Theme: celebrating and promoting the first Americans of Chinese Descent History Month since it was officially established by State of Washington in 2023.

Below are the detailed instructions about this design contest.

Requirements:

  1. To design a poster for the Americans of Chinese Descent History Month based on the historical events shown below.
    • The poster can be a timeline of all or some of the following events or based on the story of one or several of the following events. 
    • Students are encouraged to research these historical events.  Students are also encouraged to describe these historical events in their own words. 
  2. The poster must have the words “Americans of Chinese Descent History Month”.
  3. Single event posters need to include a brief description of the historical event.
  4. The design needs to be in two sizes: 11″x17″ and 24″x36″.
  5. Please include “Designed by [your name]”.

Historical Events:

  • 1785    The first Chinese immigrants arrived in the U.S.
  • 1788    The first documented arrival of Chinese immigrants to the northwestern U.S.
  • 1853    Washington Territory was established. A measure was adopted to bar people of Chinese descent from voting.
  • 1873    300 Chinese people arrived in Olympia to build the Northern Pacific Railroad. Eventually, over 15,000 Chinese labors were hired to build the railroad.
  • 1876    Census records report 250 Chinese people living in Seattle.
  • 1882    The Chinese Exclusion Act was passed, denying Chinese the right to become American citizens.
  • 1885    Tacoma Expulsion. Mobs violently forced 700 Chinese out of city of Tacoma. There were no Chinese in Tacoma until the late 1920s.
  • 1886    Seattle Riot. A Seattle citizen committee forces more than 350 Chinese out of city of Seattle.
  • 1943    The Magnuson Act repealed the Chinese Exclusion Act and allowed Chinese immigration for the first time since 1882.
  • 1962    Wing Luke was elected to the Seattle City Council and became the first Chinese American elected to a major post in the continental U.S.
  • 1996    Gary Locke was elected as Washington’s 21st governor and became the first Chinese American governor.
  • 2020    Census data show that the Chinese population is the largest Asian group in Washington State.
  • 2023    Washington passed legislation that designates January as Americans of Chinese Descent History Month, the first ever in the U.S.

Contest Submission

  •  Submission Deadline:   December 1, 2023 11:59PM
  •  Submit your designs (in two sizes) by attaching them to an email message to ACE Foundation (admin@acefus.org).
  •  By submitting, participants automatically grant ACEF a nonexclusive, irrevocable, royalty-free license to reproduce, translate, publish, and dispose of the material and to authorize others to use the designs for any of its purposes.

Contest Results:

  • All selected designs that are selected will be shared with local school districts.
  • Selected designs will be used as promotion posters in January for the recognition of Americans of Chinese Descent History Month.
  • Additionally, designers of selected designs will receive a monetary award in the amount of $75, plus coupons for after school activities.
